Newsweek 'Subscribe Now' ad: Successfully annoying

I know I don't work in the media business anymore, but having been at the helm of a newspaper's online operation for almost three full years, I have some pretty solid opinions on how and how not to attract readership and what would make someone want to subscribe to the print edition of a product.

Newsweek, I understand the woes you face currently, and the need for revenue to keep your great product relevant (and in existence), but this goddamn ad to subscribe to the magazine is not going to help. It blocks a fifth of the text column at the top of my screen as I scroll down the page and, most importantly, there's no way to get rid of it.

It does to reading what a crappy defroster does to driving: Causes me to hunch down and peer through the limited portion that allows an unfettered view.

Here's the kicker: I'm already a subscriber! I have been for years.

Unobtrusive enough here at the top, though now I see why I couldn't
find a byline. I figured it was a Sharon Begley column, but couldn't confirm.

But look! The stupid thing followed me down and obscured part of the text,
making this piece frustrating to read and distracting (and annoying)
enough for me to write this post on my lunch break.
